Save the Richmond BustArt Mural

Save the Richmond BustArt Mural
The Issue
This mural was created in November 2022 after internationally acclaimed muralist “BustArt” and local Richmond muralist “Nils” made a public offer to paint a graffitied Richmond wall at no cost.
The commission met in person on January 24th, to discuss the matter and ruled that, because the home is in a "historic district" and the mural was on previously unpainted brick (though there was extensive graffiti) that the mural must either be removed or potentially painted over in brick colored paint.
"As stated in the decision letter, you will have 30 days (February 24th) to explore options for paint removal or other means of abatement.
For your next submittal, the commission would like to see a test removal patch to either demonstrate that the paint can be removed and that you should proceed, or a test patch that demonstrates removal is not feasible. If that is the case, the commission would discuss appropriate ways to move forward.”
While I support the preservation of historical architecture, I also firmly believe that an important part of what makes Richmond unique is its existence at the intersection of tradition and innovation and the convergence of old and new. Because of the mural at 313 N Monroe St. is now a visual representation of exactly what makes Richmond special: a historical foundation enlivened by creative expression and new ideas. Furthermore, adding a mural of this caliber in the Arts District can only enhance the vibrancy of this district and draw more attention to Richmond as an important site in the world of contemporary art. With the loss of funding for the Richmond Mural Project, I would think the city would celebrate the addition of new works. It is baffling to me that they would seek to have it removed.
My hope is that if enough community support can be vocalized quickly, the commission will have to reconsider their decision and allow this incredible artwork to remain.
Thank you for your willingness to help!
