Living in Puerto Rico, an island known for its year-round sunny weather, and beautiful coasts, means that we apply sunscreen just as much in winter as we do summer. Our concern is that many sunscreens available in our island carry chemicals detrimental to the health of Puerto Rico's people and its precious natural resources. 

The majority of sunscreens available contain substances like oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosolate, and avobenzone; each of which pose a threat to the health of our island and its people. These chemicals have been heavily researched and scientifically proven to damage coral reefs, a vital part of our ecosystem, and potentially disrupt human hormones (source: Environmental Contamination and Toxicology). Puerto Rico, being a tropical paradise, sees a high usage of sunscreens, often resulting in these chemicals making their way into our marine habitats. Moreover, a large part of our population depends on fishing, tourism, and other marine-based activities for their livelihoods, so the destruction of our reefs would have far-reaching social and economic consequences.

While some companies continue to sell these harmful products others have taken it upon themselves to develop products that are safe for its user and ocean life. Sunscreen Products that use Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide as their active ingredients allow you to stay safe from the sun's radiation at no cost to the environment. 

Governments in Hawaii, St. Thomas, and districts in Mexico  have taken these matters into their own, seeing the importance of the health of their citizens and ecosystems, and issuing bans on the sale of sunscreen products that are detrimental to their people and their ecosystems. We hope that the Puerto Rico Government realizes the importance of this mission and joins them. 

By signing this petition, we call for the legislators of Puerto Rico to pass regulations that ban the sale of sunscreens containing the above mentioned harmful chemicals. It's high time we prioritize our shared health and the diversity of our beautiful island. Please sign this petition and help protect Puerto Rico's natural habitats and ensure healthier choices for its citizens.

Vivir en Puerto Rico, isla conocida por su clima soleado todo el año y sus hermosas costas, significa que utilizamos protectores solares tanto en el invierno como en el verano. Nuestra preocupación es que muchos de los protectores solares disponibles en nuestra isla contienen químicos perjudiciales para la salud del pueblo Puertorriqueño y sus valiosos recursos naturales.

La mayoría de los protectores solares disponibles contienen sustancias como oxibenzona, octinoxato, octocrileno, homosalato y avobenzona; cada una de las cuales representa una amenaza para la salud de nuestra isla y su gente. Estos químicos han sido ampliamente investigados y científicamente probados como dañinos para los arrecifes de coral, una parte vital de nuestro ecosistema, y potencialmente disruptivos para las hormonas humanas (fuente: Contaminación Ambiental y Toxicología). Puerto Rico, siendo un paraíso tropical, ve un alto uso de protectores solares, lo que a menudo resulta en que estos químicos terminen en nuestros hábitats marinos. Además, una gran parte de nuestra población depende de la pesca, el turismo y otras actividades basadas en el mar para su sustento, por lo que la destrucción de nuestros arrecifes tendría consecuencias sociales y económicas de gran alcance.

Mientras algunas empresas continúan vendiendo estos productos dañinos, otras se han comprometido a desarrollar productos que sean seguros para el usuario y la vida marina. Los protectores solares que utilizan Óxido de Titanio y Óxido de Zinc como sus ingredientes activos protegen a uno de la radiación solar sin costo alguno para el medio ambiente.

Gobiernos en Hawái, St. Thomas y distritos en México han tomado cartas en el asunto, prioritizando la salud de sus ciudadanos y ecosistemas, y han emitindo prohibiciones sobre la venta de protectores solares que son perjudiciales para la salud de los seres humanos y los ecosistemas marinos. Esperamos que el Gobierno de Puerto Rico se dé cuenta de la importancia de esta misión y se una a ellos.

Al firmar esta petición, hacemos un llamado a los legisladores de Puerto Rico para que aprueben regulaciones que prohíban la venta de protectores solares que contengan los químicos nocivos mencionados anteriormente. Es hora de priorizar nuestra salud compartida y la diversidad ecologica de nuestra hermosa isla. Por favor, firma esta petición y ayuda a proteger los hábitats naturales de Puerto Rico y asegurar elecciones más saludables para sus ciudadanos
