Save the pigeons at Shenfield Railway Bridge - Hold Network Rail to account

Save the pigeons at Shenfield Railway Bridge - Hold Network Rail to account
The Issue
Birds who nest under the bridge at Shenfield in Essex are being injured or killed. The roads are messy, local people are distressed seeing the dead bodies, fire services have had to be called upon and there are negative impacts for local businesses. We must hold Network Rail to account, they must stop neglecting the wildlife, stop causing unnecessary suffering and grid their bridge when their values state they are a 'good neighbour'.
Don't you think they could fix these problems, and, as their values state, 'be a good neighbour', when their 2023/2024 published figures report:
- £4.1 billion operating profit (increase by >33% on previous year)
- £1.5 billion profit before tax
- £11.6 billion revenue (significant increase from previous year)
- £1.1 billion saved in efficiencies
Fully gridding this bridge is the only solution. This will prevent birds nesting and stop the fledgelings and babies falling in the road to be hit by traffic. We have committed volunteers who will take the young and incubate any eggs. (Update 17/02/25)
There have already been Animal Welfare Offences where birds have been trapped and injured in the poorly maintained temporary netting in place by Network Rail and the RSPCA have written to them about this.
Network Rail claim that this is 'not a nuisance'. This is in fact more than just a 'nuisance'. It is distressing to people and wildlife are suffering. Whether you love the birds, or you care about the cleanliness of your environment, please sign and share.
Amongst Network Rail's materials, they say the below. These should not just be buzz words and catch phrases, they need to demonstrate this in practice:
"Helping plants and wildlife flourish"
"We will become better custodians for the trees, plants and animals that live next to the railway"
"The goal should be for Network Rail to be seen as a world leader in environmental management"
"There are social benefits to everything we do, and we are committed to supporting our local communities"
Sign this petition if you:
- Care for the wildlife who are suffering
- Don't like the council wasting money on additional cleaning
- Don't want to see dead or dying birds on your high street and your commute
- Care for the people who are picking up and caring for the injured birds
- Don't want road accidents to happen
- Think profit makers should do the right thing
We have caring people who will support the removal of nests and rehabilitation of any nestlings to ensure no-one is further harmed. We are committed, come on Network Rail, why aren't you?
Thank you.
Please see some images below. Some of the victims are just innocent babies:
We cannot continue to see this:
Here is our most recent patient we could not save. They are just a baby and were hit by a car. All they did was fall from their nest, but that nest is above the road. This is too sad and can't continue.
This is the bridge. As descendants of rock doves who would nest on cliffs, they have chosen these ledges to nest.
