SAVE the openness of Highgate Cemetery - SAY NO to building at The Mound

The Issue

Highgate Cemetery Trust has proposed the building of a new two-storey facilities block in the area of the East Cemetery, close to the tomb of Karl Marx, known as The Mound.

This large utilitarian building would brutally separate The Mound — which is exclusively dedicated to recent burials — from the rest of the Cemetery.  It would negatively affect the experience of visitors and mourners, who value the cemetery for its tranquillity and greenness.

No other part of Highgate Cemetery sees such a high frequency of mourners visiting the graves of their loved ones, and yet none of the grave owners were informed or consulted before planning permission was sought. Many of them are devastated by the proposed destruction of a cherished place for remembrance and peaceful contemplation. They object to the profound disrespect to the deceased and those mourning them.

We call on Camden Council to reject any application to build on the bank of The Mound and urge the Highgate Cemetery Trust to erect the facilities building on one of the viable alternative sites that have been identified.
