The Economic Value of the Northumberland Strait Sport Fishing is not the only industry (Valued at $56.4 Million in 2010) that will negatively be impacted by the proposed new waste system. This proposed effluent pipe will have a very serious negative impact on the Northumberland Strait Commercial Fishery; A $1 Billion dollar industry to Nova Scotia. The location of the proposed pipe outlet will be approximately 10kms from the mill. This will have a very serious impact on all aquatic life, especially on lobster larvae when they hatch in July and live the first month of their life near the top of the water column. Cold water lobster larvae live best in 10C water and are put at high risk when water temperatures increase due to climate change, pollution and other factors. The lobster larvae will die off completely when water temps reach 22C. The documented report completed by Stantec predicts waste water temperatures will vary year-round between 23C in Winter and 37C in July and August. Mix this with naturally warmer water and the chances of lobster larvae surviving are very minimal. After several years of bio-accumulation of waste from this proposed effluent pipe, the impact on the lobster industry in a large part of the southern Northumberland Strait will be devastating. Many other fish species will be similarly affected by the hot water effluent and the toxic chemicals that will be a part of it. Some will move away to cooler, cleaner waters, others will disappear. When the food chain of the Marine species is impacted the life cycle of the species also will be. An example would be when the food source for mackerel disappears, so too will the mackerel and the tuna that feed on the mackerel. A steady stream of 70-90 Million Litres PER DAY of mill waste will gradually contaminate the bottom of the shallow water of the Northumberland Strait. Even more than it does today at Boat Harbour’s treated cooler waste water system since the proposed waste system will only hold the effluent for 24 hours as opposed to 30 days like Boat Harbour does. This now runs a very high risk of creating even more and bigger dead zones that already exist in the Northumberland Strait today. The proposed Effluent Pipe also threatens Nova Scotia’s Tourism Industry valued at $2.7 billion dollars in 2017. The Northumberland Strait is a major contributor to this value with its lodging, resources and attractions. The proposed outlet from the effluent pipe will be approximately 4kms away from Melmerby Beach and run the risk of impacting many more world class beaches of the Gulf Shore. In NS, Tourism value/statistics are laid out by 7 regions. The Northumberland Shore region sold 201, 000 room nights in 2017; the 4th highest among the regions with the potential to be near the top close to the Halifax region. It’s hard to put a value on good health but most would agree that it is priceless. We also know the NS Healthcare system is "maxed" based on wait times, turnaround times, etc. Having cancer causing particulate exceeding safe limits into our air and now a proposed effluent pipe to go along with that will not better our health and wellness nor our health care system. In Summary, We have 3 very important Industries to Nova Scotia valued at close to $4 Billion now at risk due to a proposed effluent pipe into the Northumberland Strait. The Strait is a huge revenue generator for all 3 of these industries. In addition to that our Health and Wellness is of the utmost importance and pumping toxic chemicals into our air and water has and will cause additional health issues over time.
