Save the Nissequogue River State Park

Save the Nissequogue River State Park
The Issue
Supervisor Ed Wehrheim and Suffolk County officials are planning to acquire land adjacent to the Nissequogue River State Park and Lawrence Road (directly across from the school Admin building and New Beginnings Preschool) to use as a wastewater drainage basin. These basins will take up over 2 acres of land and they will pump effluent water overflow from the sewage treatment facility into these basins.
These 4 connected basins or pools will be over 2 acres in size and will be shorn of vegetation and surrounded by concrete walls. They will also be within 300 feet of a pre-school that is on the grounds of one of the local public school buildings and within 100 feet of ballfields at NRSP.
This sewage basin is being planned so that the downtown business district of Smithtown can connect to the Kings Park Sewage Treatment facility. We agree that more sewage treatment capacity is critical for the development of Smithtown and Long Island in general. However, placing a sewage treatment basin in the center of the park that benefits a neighboring business district seems short-sighted at best. We believe that there are other, more appropriate options for this facility that will have far less negative impact to the Park and the community.
Please sign the petition to let the local representatives know that we need to find another site for the sewage basin.
