Our school is home to a majestic oak tree that has stood for decades, bearing witness to the history, growth of our area, and most importantly the growth in our school. Unfortunately, this cherished tree is under threat due to planned infrastructure developments that disregard its environmental, historical, and cultural significance. 

While we support modernizing our facilities, continuing with this project at the cost of our campus identity weakens the very culture we teach our students to honor.

These trees are woven into the fabric of Mt. Whitney's history and daily life. Our yearbook is named The Oak precisely because these trees represent our deep roots and enduring strength. The area where the trees sit serves as an important meeting place where students gather for milestones throughout the school year. One tree in particular stands with a water fountain that are both dedicated to Doug Rudolph, a beloved former Mt. Whitney teacher and track coach. Removing them dismantles a living memorial to an educator who dedicated his life to our students.

Oak trees are vital to our ecosystem. They provide habitat and food for numerous species of birds, insects, and mammals. Their roots help in preventing soil erosion and maintaining water quality, while their canopies offer shade, reduce urban heat, and improve air quality. Removing this tree would not only disrupt the local ecosystem but also result in the loss of an irreplaceable piece of our school history and culture.

Our students are taught to care for their community and respect history. We ask that the district lead by example and find a solution that promotes progress and Mt. Whitney campus culture and history at the same time. By signing this petition, you are joining a collective voice advocating for the preservation of our environment and heritage.
