Save the Moore-Irwin House

The Issue

The Upper-Merion Township owned Moore-Irwin House.  Despite its present condition, according to preservation experts, it is far from a lost cause.  It is recognized as an historically significant structure by the state of Pennsylvania for many reasons.

Your voice is needed to help our public officials realize the need to preserve and repurpose this unique site for the future of our township.

The Moore Irwin house:

  • This very spot was the site of Muhlenberg's Headquarters during the Valley Forge encampment and was actually visited by George Washington in 1787 where he fished in the nearby stream and may have enjoyed his trout prepared in the home's fireplace
  • Perhaps more importantly, the additions to the house were designed by renowned architect R. Brognard Okie.  Extensive plans and records for this house are available in the state archive in Harrisburg and have also been saved by the KoPHS.
  • The KoP BID has a vision for the Moore Road Area.  Why shouldn't this vision include a cultural and educational way stop in a preserved and repurposed Moore-Irwin House on the new trails and linear park that the township has been planning and funding?  See the BID's vision here:  https://visitkop.com/do-business/business-parks/moore-park/
  • Moore-Irwin is the ONLY public open space in Moore Park.  Education, entertainment, the arts...a place to rest and recharge while traversing the trail or taking a break from your busy day.

The KoP Historical Society is presenting a program on Sunday, April 14 at 3pm at Christ Church Old Swedes to share a fresh look at Moore-Irwin as one of the most historical structures left in the township. New evidence will be presented that leads us to believe that the house is a historic treasure worthy of our conservation efforts.
