As a member of a military family, I depend on the commissary at Moffett Field for weekly grocery shopping, just like countless other soldiers, veterans, retirees, and their families. The commissary is not merely a place where we purchase our necessities. It is a vital community hub that significantly contributes to our quality of life. However, this essential facility is at risk of closure because its lease with NASA is set to expire in August of 2027.

The closing of the commissary will present substantial challenges for the military community.

It is more than just losing a source of affordable groceries. It would mean losing a crucial support system and a sense of camaraderie that comes with shopping alongside those who understand our unique lifestyle and needs. Travel to alternative commissaries is not feasible for many members due to distance and expense, leaving countless families in a difficult position. The closest commissary facilities to the Bay Area are Travis AFB and Monterey. This is unacceptable to those who have served who live in the Bay Area.



A sensible solution exists, and it involves utilizing the nearby land owned by the Army to build a new commissary, ensuring continuity of service for this indispensable facility. However, until funding for a new commissary is secured and construction is completed, it is imperative we keep the current commissary open.



We are calling upon NASA, DeCA the local government, and military authorities to collaborate and develop a concrete plan to ensure that this vital commissary remains operational until a new facility can be established. Acting now will demonstrate a commitment to supporting the military community and preserving the quality of life for thousands of soldiers, veterans, and their families in the surrounding area.
