DON'T PAVE THE PRESERVE!

We held a SAVE MODOC ROAD TREES - (SMRT) protest on Saturday and had great turnout...dozens and dozens of peaceful protesters carrying signs up and down this section of Modoc Road...PICS HERE.

We heard from dozens of cyclists who oppose the multi-use path proposal...Over 100+ vehicles honked in support...

Democracy in ACTION!

Let's just call this what it is...a hydrocarbon ROAD...

Asphalt definition:

1. a brown or black, tarlike, bituminous substance that consists mainly of hydrocarbons, found in large flat beds or made by refining petroleum.

Not exactly plant food...:-(

Yet, another alignment proposal from SB County came out on Saturday, an hour before our protest started...they keep ignoring the fact that paving a protected nature preserve with 2000 tons of asphalt and road base...plus, 1100' of concrete retaining walls that are 5' high does not comply with the provisions of the Easement Agreement...the impact is still HUGE!

They have not even talked about the drip line of the trees...or, the effects of driving heavy equipment over the roots...compaction of soil...etc...

The dripline is the area directly located under the outer circumference of the tree branches. When the tree canopy gets wet, any excess is shed to the ground along this dripline, much like an umbrella. This is also known as a tree's Critical Root Zone (CRZ), sometimes also called the Root Protection Zone (RPZ).

Or degradation of the soil...

Or alteration of the topography...etc...etc...

Try as they might, they can't wish this environmental protection document away...

"Alignment A would place the path directly adjacent to Modoc Road and increase the width of the roadway. Alignment A would be fully within County right-of-way and would not require any easements. This option avoids the Modoc Preserve but requires the most extensive tree removal, including the majority of the Canary Palm trees along Modoc Road.

Alignment B is also next to the roadway for portions of Modoc Road but would run along the backside of the Canary Palm trees on the eastern segment of Modoc Road. This alignment preserves the majority of the Canary Palms and reduces the overall amount of tree removal. The County prefers Alignment B because of the enhanced user experience and reduced impacts to trees."

We believe that neither of these options are viable...and, neither will comply with the Easement's Conservation Values...

Thanks again to our supporters...keep spreading the word...and, please donate to our GoFundMe legal defense fund for the trees and the land......
