Thanks so much to all of our 240 petition signing supporters to Save the Modoc Road Trees. We need to keep getting the word out and also write to our decision makers. These trees are historic...they represent our community...it would be a tragic day to L@@K out at their stumps...
As we celebrate American Independence Day, let's remember our country's first "Liberty Tree" (1646-1775). It was a famous Elm that stood in Boston Common.
In 1765, colonists in Boston staged the first act of defiance against the British government at this tree. The tree became a rallying point for the growing resistance to British rule...and, the grounds surrounding it became known as Liberty Hall. This powerful symbol of resistance was felled by British loyalists in 1775.
A year later America declared it's independence and patriots returning to Boston erected a pole at the stump site. In 1825, the French military officer, General Lafayette, who commanded American troops in several battles...returned to the spot and declared "The world should never forget the spot where once stood Liberty Tree, so famous in your annals"...
There are alternatives that would improve bike safety without losing a single tree. Traffic calming solutions...35mph speed limit...enhanced bike lane striping...etc...as well as using the existing Vieja Drive alternate route...etc...
