The Issue

My name is Adison Kapping. I am a mother and an expecting mother who has experienced firsthand the incredible care that the midwives at Floyd County Medical Center provide.

When I chose to receive care from a midwife during my first pregnancy, I wasn't just choosing a healthcare provider. I was choosing someone I trusted to walk beside me through one of the most important moments of my life. My midwife listened to me, respected my wishes, answered every single question—and trust me, there were a lot but she made me feel safe, heard, and supported. Because of her care, I had a birth experience I will forever be grateful for.

Now, during my current pregnancy, I was so excited to continue that same care because it's what I knew, what I trusted, and what made me feel comfortable. That was until yesterday, when I learned through social media that the midwives who have cared for so many families in our community had been let go and the entire midwifery program had been shut down.

Like many other mothers in our community and the surrounding areas, I didn't receive a phone call or a statement explaining what was happening to my care. Instead, I found out online. I was left feeling shocked, heartbroken, and uncertain during a time when every pregnant mother deserves stability, support, and clear communication.

This isn't just about me. It's about every woman who deserves the right to choose the type of maternity care that makes her feel heard, respected, and empowered. Midwives are more than healthcare providers. These two women built meaningful relationships with their patients and provided compassionate, personalized care that so many of us specifically sought out.

I understand that hospitals sometimes have to make difficult decisions. But eliminating an entire midwifery program and letting go of two midwives who have made such a lasting impact on so many families without giving patients the opportunity to ask questions or share their concerns has deeply affected our community. As mothers and expecting mothers, our voices matter.

I'm asking Floyd County Medical Center to listen to the mothers and families who have trusted this program for years. Please reconsider this decision, restore the midwifery program, and allow future mothers the same opportunity I had to receive exceptional, compassionate care from providers who truly make a difference.

If you believe mothers deserve a choice in their maternity care, please sign this petition and share it with others. Together, we can show Floyd County Medical Center how much this program means to the families it serves.
