The Issue

I’m not from Mumbai, but I understand and appreciate the incredible value of trees, particularly the unique and essential mangrove ecosystems that thrive on the city’s coastlines. Trees, including mangroves, are fundamental to our survival, providing clean air, supporting biodiversity, and offering a defense line against climate changes and natural disasters.

Mumbai, with its iconic sprawling metropolis, is witnessing rapid developmental activities that encroach on these natural habitats. These mangroves serve not only as green lungs for the city but are also crucial in maintaining the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. They act as buffers against flooding, help combat erosion, and provide sanctuary to various wildlife species, some of which are endangered. Observations and studies have shown that the destruction of mangroves leaves the region vulnerable to the wrath of rising sea levels and severe storms.

While progress and development are inevitable, they cannot and should not happen at the cost of nature's invaluable gifts. The government’s current projects that threaten these mangroves in the name of urbanization are short-sighted and pose long-term risks to the environment and local communities.

According to the environmental NGO, Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai has already lost over 40% of its mangrove cover over the last few decades. This alarming statistic is a clarion call for immediate action.

To address this issue, we must urge the local government to halt any construction projects that threaten our mangroves and to consider more sustainable development practices. Additionally, investments should be made in restoring and expanding mangrove areas, which will provide a lasting benefit to not just Mumbai, but the entire planet.

Ultimately, the path forward is to find a harmonious balance between development and environmental preservation. It is crucial that we safeguard these vital ecosystems for future generations and ensure that Mumbai remains resilient and vibrant.

Please sign this petition to demand immediate protection for Mumbai’s mangroves and support sustainable development alternatives.
