The Issue
For years, the planespotting location near the A1M Pillar at IGI Airport has been a cherished spot for aviation enthusiasts, families, and curious onlookers. Growing up, some of my fondest memories were formed here, alongside others who shared the same awe and fascination for watching vehicles as extraordinary as aircraft taking off and landing, precisely against the backdrop of Delhi’s vibrant skyline.
However, recent security and safety concerns have threatened to close off this area from the public, effectively removing the only accessible place where the magic of aviation could be closely admired. The absence of a designated, safe planespotting area at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) not only limits the joy of aviation enthusiasts but also poses unnecessary risks to individuals who, like me, may attempt to access less secure areas for a glimpse of these magnificent machines.
In the global context, several international airports such as Vancouver International, Munich, and Sydney not only acknowledge but celebrate aircraft enthusiasts by setting up secure, designated areas for planespotting. These facilities underline the importance of aviation culture and enhance airport community engagement.
By establishing a safe, designated aviation viewing deck at Delhi IGI Airport, we can preserve this beloved pastime and enhance appreciation for aviation. It will also support tourism, foster education, and inspire future aviators and engineers, crucially contributing to national efforts in aerospace advancements.
I urge the Airport Authority of India and the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) to notice the significance of such an initiative. The proposed area could include informative exhibits about aircraft and aviation history and maintain security protocols necessary for everyone’s safety.
