The Issue

The Downtown library branch in Lynchburg serves as an essential cornerstone for our community. In recent years, libraries have evolved beyond just being a place to borrow books. They have become vital community hubs where residents gather to access technology, engage in educational programs, participate in civic discussions, and meet neighbors. The decision to close this crucial branch would deprive our community of these invaluable resources.

This library is more than just a building filled with books; it's a safe haven for children after school, a meeting point for community groups, and a quiet place for students from local schools and colleges to study. In an era where digital literacy is paramount, the library provides free internet and computer access to those who can't afford it at home, helping to bridge the digital divide impacting many residents of Lynchburg.

Statistics from the American Library Association reveal that public libraries see hundreds of thousands of visits per year, with many patrons depending on them for resume assistance, job searches, and skill-building workshops. This is no different in Lynchburg, where our downtown branch supports the community by providing resources that support our community.

Moreover, the library plays a pivotal role in promoting literacy across all age groups, hosting reading programs for children, teens, and adults. Studies have shown that communities with strong library systems have higher literacy rates, which contribute to overall educational achievement and economic prosperity.

Closing the Lynchburg Downtown Library branch would therefore not only hinder the community's access to these critical services but also dampen the intellectual and cultural growth of our city. The library provides a vital space for learning, growth, and community engagement—services that cannot be easily replaced.

With the approval for the Main library to be renovated and for the Downtown branch to be closed, this means that Lynchburg will be without a library for approximately two years. I urge the city council and decision-makers to reconsider this decision since the citizens of Lynchburg will be without this essential resource once renovations begin. Please join me in standing up for our community's future and preserving a vital institution in Lynchburg.
