Petition updateSave the last of South Africa's rhinos with legislationWORLD'S LARGEST RHINO HORN TRAFFICKING CASE ENDS WITH A FINE!

After more than 15 years, what has been described as the world's largest rhino horn trafficking case has finally come to an end.

Dawie Groenewald, the alleged mastermind at the centre of the case, has been convicted through a plea agreement and sentenced to pay a R2 million fine or serve four years in prison. If he pays the fine, he will not spend a single day behind bars.

Let that sink in.

A case involving more than 1,700 charges. A case that became symbolic of South Africa's fight against organised wildlife crime. A case that consumed enormous amounts of state resources, investigative effort and court time.

And the outcome? A fine.

For those who wonder why Saving the Wild continues to call for specialised environmental courts and mandatory minimum sentences for serious wildlife crimes, this is why.

Rhinos cannot survive on good intentions. They need a justice system capable of delivering meaningful consequences to those who profit from their destruction.

The message sent today is deeply concerning: even in the biggest rhino horn trafficking case in history, prison is not guaranteed.

Please keep sharing the petition and we will continue to work behind the scenes, engaging with the Ministries, and advocating for real change.

It's a long road ahead, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. There has to be.

Justice is the endgame.
