Hello Koala Lovers,
I haven't posted for a while but I wanted to update you on how the Braemar State Forest is going. Unfortunately I don't have good news.
The recovering populations of koalas and other endangered species are now facing a new battle. The government was granted permission to go ahead with the logging after NEFA fought hard in the courts to have it stopped. They have begun logging and are selecting larger, mature trees for removal. These trees not only provide food and shelter for our wildlife, but they also provide essential nesting sites for all sorts of animals in the form of hollows that only occur in older trees.
I will be writing to Penny Sharpe to express my disappointment. She has ignored the scientific data presented to her by the experts. She has ignored NEFA who have gathered so much information and researched the koala populations of the Braemar and Myrtle State Forests. She ignored the voices of children, my school friends, who united and begged her to leave the promised Great Koala National Park alone. And she has ignored over 14,000 signatures gathered on this petition, and others I'm sure. And now she is asking for people to come forward and suggest ways that the government can protect koala habitat and protect the health and safety of koalas! This does not make any sense at all!!
How you can help:
- Head to Penny Sharpe's Instagram page (pennysharpemlc) and add your comment asking her to stop destroying koala habitat.
- Send emails, make phone calls. Anything to let her know how you feel.
- Click the link in Penny Sharpe's Instagram bio where you can find the 'Reviewing the NSW Koala Strategy' link and submit your views and suggestions.
- Most importantly, Do Not Give Up!
Thank you everyone for continuing to fight for the koalas.
Wishing you all a beautiful day.
