Save The Iconic Moreland Hotel Bistro

The issue

The Moreland Hotel Bistro - a beloved local space which reflects Brunswick's migrant history - is soon to be stripped of its iconic interior to make way for MORE gambling! SAVE THE MORELAND HOTEL BISTRO!

Who's in charge?

The Moreland Hotel is owned by ALH Group, a branch of Endeavour Group. This multibillion dollar giant in the drinks, hospitality & gambling industries has a significant amount of shares owned by Woolworths (despite a partial demerger this year). They are the 3rd biggest gambling enterprise after Crown and Star, and have recently had 62 charges laid against them by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission for allegedly failing to comply with their legal obligations to protect patrons from gambling harm. They are a profit-hungry mega-corporation, out of touch with the local community.

Why is this important?

The Moreland Hotel Bistro is a popular, beloved cultural icon of Sydney Road, Brunswick. What makes the Bistro special is the legendary replica of Michelangelo's David amidst a monolithic Colosseum replica under a painted summer's sky on the dome ceiling. It is truly unique and special. Any weekend, the Bistro is packed with families and locals enjoying a delicious pub feed. The Bistro is separate from the already-established pokies room and sports bar - but not for long.

Brunswick has a rich history as a working-class migrant suburb, with particularly large Italian and Greek communities. Though Brunswick has gone through lots of changes, The Moreland Hotel Bistro is a valued testament to the migrant communities who made Brunswick what it is today.

The Brunswick community love the legendary interior of The Moreland Hotel Bistro.

We won't let a multibillion-dollar corporation turn it into another gambling hole harming everyday people!
