Save the Humanities Majors at MU

Save the Humanities Majors at MU
The Issue
The Academic Policy, Budgeting, and Planning (APBP) Committee of the Faculty Council recommended that the following majors be eliminated, impacting current students, faculty, and alumni:
Theology and Religious Studies
Philosophy
Mathematics
Art
History
Sociology
English
Economics
Secondary Education
English and Humanities
Alumni have felt strongly that the elimination of these programs will harm Marymount's mission which emphasizes intellectual curiosity, service to others, and a global perspective. The mission states, "A Marymount education is grounded in the liberal arts," and touts an education that is holistic. Without these traditional majors, many of which are part of and the foundation of a university, Marymount's decision not only goes against its very mission but also devalues the impact that these programs have had on shaping and guiding the careers of their alumni.
These majors are a vital part of a well-rounded education, providing students with a deep understanding of culture, history, and the human experience. These disciplines also teach critical thinking, analytical skills, and communication abilities that are essential in almost every career field.
While STEM fields are essential for advancing technology and scientific knowledge, the humanities help us understand the ethical, cultural, and historical implications of these advances. They allow us to understand the broader societal context in which these advances take place and to ensure that they are used for the greater good.
Moreover, the humanities are central to a well-functioning democracy, providing a framework for understanding and analyzing social and political issues. They encourage empathy and foster cultural and intellectual diversity, promoting a richer and more tolerant society.
Eliminating these programs from Marymount University would have far-reaching consequences for society and would hinder the development of well-rounded, thoughtful individuals capable of making meaningful contributions to their communities. It is essential to advocate for the preservation of these majors at MU.
Please sign this petition to share with the Board of Directors to request that they strongly reconsider the proposal to move forward with these program cuts. If you have a personal story about as an alumni about how these programs have helped shape and guide you post-graduation, be sure to share that information as well.
