Hello!
Thank you SO MUCH for signing the petition calling for the historic United Artists theater in Berkeley to be saved from destruction and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
In the past few months Save the UA Berkeley has made good progress. We've built a website, launched the online petition, attended public meetings and events, gone on a radio show (the mighty KALX), and scheduled meetings with city leaders.
But there's still so much to do! This palatial Art Deco gem is at high risk of being almost entirely demolished by a development proposal that is on a fast track with the city. Our group believes the UA is capable of being restored and given new life as a live theater or multi-use arts venue that would be a cultural and economic beacon of the downtown.
We need some additional help to MAKE SOME NOISE! If you haven't already, here are some actions you can take:
SHARE THE CHANGE.ORG PETITION. So far, 680 people have signed the petition, which is awesome. We want to get it to 1,000 signatures and beyond, so please consider sharing it on social media and/or sending it to your friends and family. Here's the link: https://chng.it/dMKd4YHX6k
WRITE TO CITY LEADERS. This is CRUCIAL and can be quick and easy. You just need to send one simple email to five email addresses. Please see the Take Action page of our website: https://www.savetheuaberkeley.org/take-action/
JOIN OUR FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/saveourua
If you're local:
ATTEND THE LPC MEETING THIS THURSDAY. The city's Landmark Preservation Committee will eventually be voting on the development proposal that threatens the theater. If you live in Berkeley or the surrounding area, please come and speak for two minutes during the public comments period at the start of the monthly meeting. The next meeting is this Thursday Oct. 5 at 7pm at the North Berkeley Senior Center at 1901 Hearst Ave (at MLK).
TALK ABOUT THE ISSUE ON NEXTDOOR. If you live in the East Bay, especially Berkeley or surrounding cities, please consider posting about Save the UA Berkeley on Nextdoor. Please check out our website (especially the FAQ and History pages) for talking points. Please include our website in your post: www.savetheuaberkeley.org
REACH OUT TO LOCAL MEDIA. Ask Berkeleyside, the Chronicle, the East Bay Times, and the East Bay Express to cover the Save the UA Berkeley campaign. Email them or tag them in social media.
Thank you so much for joining this fight!
