The issue

The Rannerdale Home in Papanui, Christchurch, once served as a sanctuary for the brave veterans injured in the Boer and both World Wars. From 1921 to 1956, it offered comfort and healing to those who had sacrificed so much, with many spending their final days in its care. Although the home is long gone, its legacy remains etched in the memories and stories of those who knew its history. Today, few are aware that this home was situated on a large site between Papanui and Watford St near the corner of Blighs Road.

One powerful symbol of this legacy survives: a majestic redwood tree standing tall outside 127 Watford St on council land, opposite where the Rannerdale Home once stood. This ancient tree, likely planted as a memorial, is a living testament to the courage and sacrifices of the servicemen who were cared for there. Its presence is a solemn reminder of the heroes who dedicated their lives to our freedom.

Regrettably, this redwood tree is now under threat as a group or locals have petitioned the council for its removal and the council are in the process of passing a recommendation to the community board for its removal. It is currently not a scheduled (protected) tree and locals and council alike are unaware of its historical context. As the city evolves and develops, historic symbols like this one risk being overlooked in the quest for modernity. We cannot allow another piece of our cherished history to disappear silently. The city has few heritage trees remaining.

To honour the veterans and preserve our history, we propose that the heritage redwood tree be officially recognised, given scheduled tree status and preserved. Installing a plaque at its base would serve as a poignant tribute to those who suffered and persevered during some of the darkest periods in history.

Preserving this tree is not only about honoring the past, but about educating future generations on the importance of remembering those who came before us, those who sacrificed so much. The heritage redwood tree is a part of Christchurch's history that deserves recognition and protection.

Let us come together to ensure this symbol of courage and sacrifice continues to stand, to remind us all of the cost of our freedom. Please sign this petition to save and honour the heritage redwood tree in Watford St, Christchurch.
