The Issue

The Hasdeo forest, situated in the heart of Chhattisgarh, India, is on the brink of a crisis. Known for its rich biodiversity, this forest acts as a critical carbon sink and serves as a habitat for numerous endangered species. The looming threat of mining and indiscriminate cutting of trees poses a significant risk to this fragile ecosystem, which if not checked could lead to devastating ecological consequences.

According to a report by the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Chhattisgarh has lost sizeable forest area over the past few years due to industrial activities. Mining, in particular, has been a major driver of this deforestation, leading not only to loss of green cover but also to soil erosion and water scarcity in the region. The local communities that depend on the forest for their livelihoods are deeply impacted; they rely on its resources for food, fuel, and medicine.

We propose halting the issuance of new mining licenses in the region and enforcing strict regulations on tree cutting to protect the Hasdeo forest. By prioritizing sustainable development strategies, we can ensure the preservation of this vital ecosystem while supporting the local communities. Initiatives like community-led forest conservation programs and afforestation projects should be supported by local and national governments.

The protection of Hasdeo is not just a local issue—it has global implications. Forests play a vital role in climate regulation and are integral to combatting the growing threat of climate change. As citizens, it is our duty to stand up against deforestation and environmental degradation.

We urgently call upon the government of Chhattisgarh and the central authorities to take proactive steps to protect the Hasdeo forest from mining and deforestation. Join us in our mission to save this precious natural resource by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
