Save the Green Heart of Thiruvananthapuram: Keep the Zoo Land a Park, Not Concrete
Save the Green Heart of Thiruvananthapuram: Keep the Zoo Land a Park, Not Concrete
The Issue
For over 160 years, the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo has been more than a home for animals. Its towering old trees, quiet lake and wooded paths form one of the last large green spaces in the middle of our capital. Generations of families have walked there, and for anyone who grew up in this city, it is part of who we are.
The Kerala government has proposed moving the zoo to a forest area such as Neyyar. We support giving the animals a larger, more natural home. But the question now is: what happens to the land they leave behind?
Some fear the site could be opened to private investment or commercial development. Once the trees are cut and the ground is built over, that green space is gone forever. Kerala has already seen the cost of environmental destruction in the disasters in Wayanad and the high ranges around Munnar. Our city cannot afford to lose its lungs.
We call on the Government of Kerala to:
• Keep the entire zoo site a green public park, open to all
• Protect its existing trees, lake and natural landscape
• Rule out any private sale, lease or commercial construction on the land
• Consult residents and environmental experts before any final decision
Thiruvananthapuram doesn't need another concrete jungle. It needs to protect the living heritage it already has.
