Save the Grand Canyon from the Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine

Save the Grand Canyon from the Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine
The Issue
Urgent: Stop Uranium Mining at the Grand Canyon's Doorstep
The Grand Canyon faces an unprecedented threat. The Pinyon Plain uranium mine, just six miles from the South Rim, began uranium production in December 2023. This isn't just another environmental concern—it's a crisis that demands immediate action.
We, the undersigned, call for the immediate suspension of operations at the Pinyon Plain Mine for the following critical reasons:
The EPA has confirmed what we've long feared: this mine could contaminate the region's precious groundwater systems. Once uranium enters these ancient aquifers, there's no going back.
The Havasupai Tribe, who have lived beneath the Canyon's cliffs since time immemorial, face an existential threat to their way of life. As Guardians of the Grand Canyon, they have consistently opposed uranium mining that endangers their ancestral waters.
Most alarmingly, the mine's environmental impact study is nearly four decades old. We're using Reagan-era science to justify modern mining operations at one of America's most precious natural treasures.
We demand:
An immediate pause on all mining operations.
A new, comprehensive environmental impact study using current scientific standards.
Full consultation with the Havasupai Tribe and other affected Indigenous communities.
Protection of the Grand Canyon's watershed for future generations.
The choice between temporary uranium profits and permanent water protection isn't a choice at all. We can't allow short-term gains to destroy a priceless natural wonder that has taken millions of years to form.
By signing this petition, you join thousands of concerned citizens, environmental experts, and Indigenous leaders in demanding action to protect the Grand Canyon's waters. The Forest Service has indicated openness to conducting a new environmental assessment—your voice can help make this happen.
