Save the funding of the International Baccalaureate in State Schools
Save the funding of the International Baccalaureate in State Schools
The Issue
The UK Government has decided to cut the funding allocated to State Schools for offering the International Baccalaureate. This will make the IB unavailable or limited to students in the UK that are unable to afford to attend private schooling or pay potential fees state schools will have to require. Although this will not affect current IB students, all future potential students will be forced to reconsider their decision to take this course.
The Labour Party's decision will massively impact working and middle class families primarily due to the course likely only being offered in private schools in most areas due to majority of state schools not having the ability to continue running the program without funding.
The IB is a course that offers a wide range of subjects taught at a high level making it preferable to students who do not want to narrow down their options to 3-4 A levels, students who plan on attending the top-20 Higher education institutes and students who plan on studying abroad. The Labour Party's decision to cut the funding to the 55 State Schools who offer the Baccalaureate will not fulfill the plan to increase funding to more traditional courses in any substantial way.
The current funding was around £2000 per student in order to cover the extra teaching hours the course required. However, with only approximately 5000 IB students, this does not make up more than 0.01% of the £119.7 Billion spent on education annually.
Another consideration is that the previous Conservative party's Government's decision to go through with Brexit already limited the ability of UK Students to attend Education in Europe and removing the ability of almost all students to do the IB will only serve to limit this further.
We hope that, if we can demonstrate the importance and impact of the International Baccalaureate, this decision will be repealed or reconsidered.
