Dear Supporters,
I’m writing to share an important update about the former Possilpark Railway Station building on Balmore Road.
I have now received confirmation that the building is officially owned by the Crown, as it has been classified as ownerless property.
This changes things.
It means there is now a recognised route for a local community organisation to apply to take ownership of the building in the public interest.
The initial stage where government bodies were invited to express interest has already concluded with no interest received. The process is now in its Local Authority phase, which runs until 19 April 2026. During this time, community interest can be formally considered.
Under the Ownerless Property Transfer Scheme (OPTS), ownerless buildings are typically transferred for a nominal price (often around £1). However, any group taking it on would need to cover legal costs and, most significantly, the major restoration work required. The station is currently in very poor condition and would need a long-term, well-funded repair project.
Importantly, I have been advised that if there is serious and viable community interest, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust may be able to assist with initial advice, options appraisal or feasibility work.
This does not make the challenge small but it does mean there is now a genuine opportunity that did not exist before.
If you are part of a constituted community organisation or know of one that may be interested in exploring this further, now is the time to come forward.
Official guidance on eligibility can be found here:
Thank you again for your support in keeping attention on the future of this historic building. Please feel free to share this update so it may reach the right person.
