Save THE FLATS DIY skatepark in Odenton

Save THE FLATS DIY skatepark in Odenton
The Issue
The destruction of the The Flats DIY Skatepark not only impacts the individuals who have dedicated a substantial amount of personal hours and resources, but also the Anne Arundel County community at large. This week the spot seems to have been marked and prepared for demolition and we are appealing to you to intervene.
What started two years ago was simply the goal to make use of vacant land that had not been used in a positive way for the community in over a decade. Fast forward to present day, we have collectively built a community oriented outdoor space. The Flats DIY is so much more than a space for people who skate to hone their skills. The Flats DIY has become a space to bring people of all different ages, backgrounds, and cultures together. To be noted that The Flats DIY is the ONLY place to currently skate in Odenton.
Permanent DIY skateparks have become essential community fixtures in Charleston, Asheville, Montreal, Vancouver, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle and various other cities. If permitting The Flats DIY to remain intact would mean a community green space, a space where kids and adults can get exercise outdoors, and even expand projects like a community garden. These are all things that Odenton currently lacks. Skateboarding culture has grown and been proven to have positive impacts on the quality of life for individuals and communities.
We have poured our hearts into making this space and it has gained a substantial following in the greater DMV area. Our instagram page has over 700 followers and recognition from the International Skate DIY community.
We are hoping that you see the potential in this young group of skateboarders who are so eager to engage in their community in a positive way, and you (Council member, Julie Hummer) strongly consider the message it would send to reconsider the current plan of demolition.
Thank you for your consideration and immediate action. The Flats DIY has spawned a community of skateboarders who are dedicated to working with the City to take care of the space.
