The Issue

On a recent visit to Charnwood Queens Park, my daughter and I, along with many other families, witnessed a scene that was both heartbreaking and alarming. In the council-run aviary, there is a bird stripped of its feathers, either through self mutilation caused by stress or by other birds visibly shivering in the cold. This poor creature is suffering, and despite the evident distress, the RSPCA is unable to act because the aviary is situated on council land.

Reviews and reports from other visitors to the park reveal that this has been an ongoing issue for over five years. It's time we take collective responsibility to ensure this bird receives the care and protection it so desperately needs. It's not just about saving one bird — it's about setting a precedent for the humane treatment of all creatures in council care.

The weather conditions, especially during the colder months, pose a significant threat to the bird's health and well-being. The lack of feathers leaves it vulnerable to hypothermia, which can result in severe illness or even death. We cannot stand idly by while an innocent life is at risk, especially when action can be taken to prevent such an outcome.

This petition urges the Charnwood Borough Council to relocate the featherless bird to a more suitable environment, one that is equipped to meet its needs and safeguard its health. We also call for a review of the conditions of the aviary to ensure that all the animals under its care are kept safe and healthy.

Humane treatment of animals should be a priority, and as a community, we can advocate for changes that align with these values. By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to the call for compassion and responsibility in the care of animals. Let's unite to protect this bird from further suffering and ensure it has the chance at a better life.

Sign this petition today to demand a change for the featherless bird in Charnwood's council aviary. Together, we can make a difference.
