The Fairhaven Animal Shelter is a cornerstone of our community, providing a safe haven for countless animals in need. Unfortunately, due to a budget shortfall, there is a proposal on the table to close our beloved shelter in an attempt to cut costs. I'm deeply concerned that taking away the shelter would be rash and detrimental not only to the animals but to our community at large. The fear is that without this crucial resource, our animals will be left with nowhere to turn, and once we lose this vital service, what's next on the chopping block?

This is not just about preserving the shelter; it's about maintaining our community values. We should not act in haste without thoroughly exploring every possible solution. Acting hastily without a carefully considered plan during our budget adjustments could set a dangerous precedent for future decisions.

I propose that we allow a nonprofit organization to step in, spearheading fundraising efforts and accepting donations to provide a new stream of funding to support the shelter. This approach should have the time to become a solution.  Keep the Fairhaven Animal Shelter fully funded for the upcoming budget cycle. It would provide enough time to prepare and make thoughtful decisions about the shelter's long-term sustainability. 

Fairhaven has always been a town that cares deeply for all its residents, including our four-legged friends. Let's stand together to ensure our animal companions continue to have a refuge where they're treated with care and dignity.
