Save the Connellsville Band program

Save the Connellsville Band program
The Issue
The school board is currently considering eliminating Mr. Gore’s teaching position at the high school, reducing the band program from one and a half positions down to just half of a position. This decision would create serious disruption and instability within the program. Having a teacher available for only half of the school day is simply not enough to support the wide range of classes and activities that depend on consistent instruction and guidance. If this change moves forward, courses such as musical theater arts, music composition, music theory, and guitar may be cut entirely or significantly limited due to lack of time and staffing. Students who are already enrolled or planning to enroll would lose valuable educational opportunities. In addition, important Falcon Time activities like jazz band, combined band rehearsals, and individual lessons would likely disappear, removing critical chances for students to grow and collaborate. What makes this especially concerning is that participation in the band program is increasing, not declining. Despite this growth, the proposed reduction would severely weaken the program. One of the most visible and pride-filled representations of our school—the marching band—could be lost entirely. Furthermore, successful indoor programs such as color guard and drumline, which have recently earned first- and second-place achievements, would also be at risk of being eliminated. This decision would not benefit students, the school, or the community. Instead, it would dismantle a thriving program that offers both educational and extracurricular value. We urge the school board to reconsider and ask the community to support efforts to preserve and restore the band program that so many students depend on and care deeply about.
