Save the City of Belfast School of Music

The Issue

The City of Belfast School of Music has been in operation in Belfast for 58 years opening its doors in 1965. It provides specialist musical education and performing groups for children aged 7 to 18. It is world renowned having produced music greats like Sir James Galway, Barry Douglas, Sheridan Tongue, Katie Melua, and breakthrough alternative artists like Vittorio Angelone, and many many more. On Wednesday 11th an ensemble from the City of Belfast School of Music (CBSM) welcome the US President Joe Biden to the official opening of the new Ulster University Campus in Belfast.

In June this year the doors of the home of the CBSM at the Fortwilliam Centre in North Belfast will close for the last time as the Education Authority of Northern Ireland repurposes the building and the CBSM is left homeless. Moreover the EANI seem determined to redesignate the CBSM as 'not a school' in yet a further move to strip away its proud history, stature and relevance for the young potential musicians of Belfast which is a UNESCO City of Music. Our action group are meeting the Education Authority on April 25th so your support now is so important.
