The Issue

When I arrived at Huntington High School as a freshman, I had no intentions of continuing with singing. However, meeting Derek Ellis changed everything. He encouraged me to give choir another chance, which led to a friendship that has come to feel like family. Over time, I invited him to my church, unaware that he was in search of a new church community. This bond grew stronger with every fellowship, and eventually, he and his wife became my sister’s godparents. Their impact is not limited to me; countless students have had similar transformative experiences and have found a home in the choir.

The choir and piano department at Huntington High School is a bastion of musical excellence and personal growth, known for its performances in the community, at Marshall University events, and even the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York City. It is a sanctuary for over 40 students, giving them the opportunity to express themselves and their talents freely. Cutting this program would devastate not just these students, but the community that takes pride in its achievements.

The value of arts education, particularly at Huntington High School, is immense. Studies have shown that students engaged in music programs perform better academically and develop essential life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and creativity. The choir has been instrumental in shaping not only talented musicians but also compassionate, dedicated individuals. This is not merely an extracurricular option; it is a vital part of our educational and community fabric.

The decision to dismantle this integral department would contradict the emphasis on holistic education that Huntington High School stands for. Music programs are proven to enhance academic achievement and increase student engagement. Many of us remember the thrill of each performance and the sense of accomplishment. We owe it to these students to fight for the continuation of this program that has been around for generations.

Please sign this petition to keep the choir and piano department thriving at Huntington High School. Let's stand together to preserve a part of our hearts and heritage for the future students who deserve the same opportunities we had.
