Save the children's play area at Walnuts Shopping Centre
The Issue
When I moved to Orpington with my one-year-old, the children's play area at the Walnuts Shopping Centre became an essential refuge for us. On countless rainy days, it provided not only a haven for play and new friendships for my child, but an invaluable social space where I connected with other local parents too. It quickly became apparent how heavily used and loved this facility is by our community.
Now, the decision to permanently remove this cherished space threatens to cut off a vital lifeline for young families in Orpington. According to a survey conducted by the National Playing Fields Association, access to local play spaces significantly boosts children's physical and mental health, offering benefits that extend to the wider community as well. Without this facility, families will lose a free and accessible and safe space for their children to play, particularly impacting those who may not have the money for the other costly pre-book only soft plays in the area.
The loss of such spaces can lead to isolation and decreased community cohesion. This play area is a community hub and a source of support for numerous parents and caregivers who rely on these interactions for socialising and building networks. In a world where we are increasingly isolated, maintaining such community spaces is more important than ever.
We're calling on the management of Walnuts Shopping Centre to reconsider their decision. Instead of removing this community asset, let's explore solutions that support maintaining and even enhancing the play area to better serve local families. Options such as community funding drives, partnerships with local businesses, or forming a volunteer committee to manage and upkeep the area are all worth consideration.
Sign this petition today to urge the Walnuts Shopping Centre to keep the children's play area open. By doing so, you will be preserving a space that brings joy, fosters healthier lifestyles, and tightens the bonds within our community. Let's protect what makes Orpington a special and supportive place to raise a family.
The notice by the play area reads:
"We regret to advise that the soft play equipment is being permanently removed on Friday 31st July 2026.
The annual inspection identified that many of the component parts were beyond economical repair.
We are sorry that this will be disappointing to our visitors, big and small, but the seating will remain open for public use.
Sincerely,
The Centre Manager"
