On Monday, President Peskin, Supervisor Melgar, and Supervisor Preston will consider updating the Draft Landmark Designation Ordinance for the Castro Theatre. We want to see the text updated so that it accurately reflects the findings in the Landmark Designation Fact Sheet, which the Historic Preservation Commission approved on February 1, 2023.

See below for suggested talking points for public comments:
- I am in support of this committee approving the Draft Landmark Designation Ordinance for the Castro Theatre.
- I am requesting that the Committee clarify the language, updating “presence of seating” to the more accurate “fixed theatrical seating configured in movie-palace style.”
- The Castro Theatre would not be the Castro Theatre if the floors are flattened and the seating configuration removed.
- The Landmark Designation Fact Sheet outlines the importance of the movie palace-style seating as a defining characteristic of the space as a historic cinema.
- The orchestra configuration and the movie-palace seating are key to the Castro’s film heritage and LGBTQ intangible cultural heritage.
- With this change, the Committee will further the protection of the Castro Theatre as both a historic movie palace and a site of international significance for LGBTQ cultural heritage
