Petition to Save the Carindale Library Makerspace

We are calling on Brisbane City Council to reverse the decision to close the Carindale Library Makerspace, a beloved and invaluable resource for our community. Since its establishment, the Makerspace has served as a vital hub for learning, creativity, and connection—offering workshops, programs, and events that support people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities.

The Carindale Library Makerspace is not just a room with equipment; it’s a space where intergenerational friendships have formed, where local artists have found paid opportunities, and where lifelong learning is encouraged and nurtured. It provides a safe, inclusive environment for marginalised groups, such as the LGBTQIA+ community, and offers access to resources that many cannot afford during this time of rising living costs.

Despite these benefits, the Council has decided to close the Makerspace, citing its underutilisation. However, this reasoning does not reflect the true usage of the space. The Makerspace serves over 1,500 users annually through various programs, independent bookings, and events, many of which are fully booked with waitlists. The Council’s decision ignores the unique nature of the Makerspace and the essential role it plays in fostering community connections, creative skill development, and cultural engagement.

The closure of this space will have significant negative impacts on our community, particularly for vulnerable members who rely on it for creative engagement and social interaction. This decision also directly contradicts the Council’s own mission to promote vibrant cultural and artistic activities and support healthy, active lifestyles for Brisbane residents.

We ask Brisbane City Council and our elected members to:

  1. Pause the closure process and halt the donation or sale of equipment until a final decision is made with full consultation from the community and Makerspace users.
  2. Reopen the Makerspace with the necessary funding and resources to meet the growing demand and continue to serve the community.
  3. Meet with Makerspace users to better understand the space’s impact on the community and discuss potential solutions.
  4. If reopening is not possible, provide the community with a permanent space in the Carindale area to establish a community-run Makerspace, with the equipment and inventory donated to continue this essential service.

We believe that spaces like the Carindale Library Makerspace are not just important—they are necessary for fostering creativity, building social networks, and enriching the lives of people across all walks of life. The closure of this space would be a devastating loss to our community, and we call on the Brisbane City Council to reconsider their decision.

By signing this petition, you are standing with us in advocating for the preservation of the Carindale Library Makerspace, ensuring that it remains a place of learning, creativity, and community connection for all.

Thank you for standing with us.
