Save the 'Buhay Dagat' in the Philippines!

The Issue

As a witness to a ton of people scattering their trash in the city, it pains me to see that a large sum of people do not care about the environment anymore. The carelessness with which waste is disposed of doesn't only damage the wildlife but also severely impacts our resources and the very environment we rely upon.

An example that can be seen in the Philippines is that our once clear and blue bodies of water have turned into a murky shade of green, and our once clean coral reefs house, not fish, but plastic bags. The Philippines is among the top contributors to marine plastic pollution globally, with over 2.7 million metric tons of plastic waste generated each year, 61,000 metric tons in one day, much of it finding its way into our waters. Furthermore, our trash finds their way to the lives of our marine animals, in such way that it may lead their species to near extinction.

Despite the existence of waste management laws, enforcement and awareness remains inconsistent and insufficient to curb this mounting crisis. Clear and consistent national enforcement of these laws presents a viable solution to significantly reduce plastic leakage into our waters and natural habitats. Adopting strict measures and penalties against non-compliance, setting up regular inspections, and fostering community collaborations can enhance the protection for our rivers and oceans.

Moreover, public awareness campaigns can play a crucial role in reversing the trend of environmental apathy, inspiring citizens to actively participate in waste reduction efforts. Along with this, advocacy and campaign posts on the internet (or in social media) would also contribute to the spreading of awareness, hope and empathy. This would help the campaign reach, not only a wide audience, but a wide audience filled with the younger generations. Without collective action and government accountability, our magnificent marine ecosystems will continue to degrade. The time to act is now.

By signing this petition, you are urging the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines to take immediate action in strictly enforcing plastic waste bans. This step is crucial to protect our waters, sustain biodiversity, and ensure a healthier environment for future generations.

Protect, Preserve, and Persevere!

Stand with us and be a part of the solution!
