In 2016, Bristol Family Cycling opened its gates to South Bristol and the wider area.

Since then it has helped numerous people, both young and old, to gain confidence with cycling as well as giving many the enjoyment of exercise and health benefits in a safe and secure space. 

The new Bristol Regional Cycling Hub will include areas to learn to ride, a one-kilometre competition track, a car park, and new and improved connections to the local cycle network.

Costing £15m, it will be built on a former landfill site at Henacre Open Space in Lawrence Weston in 2026 and 2027.

It will be a state-of-the-art facility and will be a centre where the benefits and enjoyment of cycling with be promoted further. 

The tragedy of this is that the existing facility will close. South Bristol loses out again. We believe that Bristol is big enough to have two cycling centres so that benefit of cycling can continue be enjoyed. 

Areas of South Bristol have high levels poor health, obesity and inactivity. To shut a facility that has such a big impact locally needs to be rethought.

Here are some facts of what the Lawrence Weston Bristol Regional Cycling Hub would feature:

A 1km long, 6m wide closed loop cycling track allowing everyone to ride safely on a traffic free circuit, specially designed for youth series sports cycling at a regional and national level

A Bikeability training area with a rubberised track where everyone can learn to cycle

A fun cycling play area for practising skills

A two-storey building with offices, public toilets, training rooms - available to hire, cycle mechanics’ workshops and storage

A gated car park with EV charging points that would be locked when the facility is closed to prevent anti-social behaviour

A new public footpath around the edge of the site

A slight diversion of the public right of way and upgrade to the existing National Cycle Network (NCN41) route towards the bottom of the site

lighting so the facility could be used all year round from 8am to 9pm

It would offer:

A traffic free area dedicated to cycling

Bikeability programmes for schools and families to learn and improve their cycling skills

Inclusive cycling sessions for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and adults with disabilities

Regional and national youth series cycling competitions

Cycling for sport and health community programmes

Targeted active travel and health programmes

Employment, training and local inclusion

Road safety training for bikes, cargo bikes and scooters
cycle maintenance sessions

All for a £15 million and the loss of the Bristol Family Cycling centre. Why does South Bristol need to keep losing facilities that are so well used! 

We need 3,500 signatures to get this petition in a Full Council meeting.
