The Issue

This is the flyer/poster which consists of some essential details regarding the issue, its impacts, and our petition.

India's oldest mountain range, and a stationary, unwavering, and magnificent natural phenomena throughout history. The Aravallis play an integral role in protecting Delhi-NCR from desertification. They block dust storms from reaching Delhi-NCR, which would carry with them drought that is already impacting Rajasthan. In addition, they are home to endangered flora and fauna.

However, a decree has been made by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change defining the Aravalli hills and requiring that they be over 100 metres above sea level to count as part of the Aravallis. This removes protections for nearly 90% of the Aravallis. The oldest hill range in the Indian subcontinent, the Aravallis energise aquifers, feed herbivores and prevent the spread of the Thar desert.

We have constitutional grounding based on the cases Subhash Kumar v. State of Bihar (1991), stating that the right to life in Article 21 of the constitution extends to the right to a clean and healthy environment. In addition, Article 48A states the State has a duty to conserve forests and wildlife and Article 51A(g) extends the same responsibility to citizens. In addition, the principle of absolute liability extends to openly hazardous mining activity, a principle ratified into law in 1987. However, we are already seeing the auctioning off of land in the Aravalli region for mining purposes and it is likely to worsen as protections are removed.

Our aim is simple: to convince the Supreme Court of India that it is against public interest to continue mining in the Aravallis and that it violates the precedent set by the case T.N. Godavarman Thirumalpad v. Union of India (1995), banning mining in the Aravallis, which at that time included and encompassed areas not encompassed by the current threshold, those areas being directly impacted by the mining. We aim to encourage the Supreme Court to put its foot down against the destruction of habitats. That is exactly what your signature will assist the court in doing, as it will give the court a valid, big enough reason to preserve the Aravalli ranges.

Your voice matters, and that is why it is important that you must speak out against pressing issues like this. Its our environment, and it's in our hands, so we must act now.
