The Issue

Save Our Alvaston Co-op - Don't Sell This Vital Community Store!

The Co-op store on Holbrook Road, Alvaston, has served our community for 70 years. Now it's up for sale - and I'm calling on Co-op head office to reconsider!

The staff are more like friends to me now – one has worked here for close to 40 years. For many elderly residents, this shop is their only daily conversation.

It's not making a loss. The store is busy every day, home to a vital Post Office, and a lifeline for those who can't walk half an hour to the nearest supermarket.

This goes against everything the Co-op stands for. The Co-op was built on community, democracy, and concern for people, not pure profit.  Of the 7 core Co-op Principles, principle 7 is:

Concern for community: Working sustainably to support and develop the local communities they serve.

The Rochdale Pioneers would be turning in their graves.

I'm asking the Co-op to:

Reconsider the sale
Invest in the store instead
Put members and the community first, as you always promised

Don't turn your back on Alvaston. Keep our Co-op open!

If this petition gathers enough signatures, I will present it to Co-op head office to make clear the strength of public feeling and the bad publicity a closure would bring.
