The Issue

My children were fortunate enough to be part of the 5th Block reading and literacy program in Toronto's Catholic District schools. This unique program played an instrumental role in building their foundational literacy skills, which set them up for academic success in later years. Sadly, there is now a threat of dismantling this vital resource, which has benefitted countless students over the years.

The 5th Block program is designed to give struggling readers the extra support they need to achieve literacy at an early age. According to the Ontario Ministry of Education, early literacy intervention is crucial for students to succeed in their future educational pursuits. Research consistently shows that children who are not reading at grade level by the end of third grade are more likely to fall behind and struggle throughout their school years. The 5th Block program has proven to be effective in helping children overcome this challenge.

With literacy being a fundamental building block of education, the removal of programs like the 5th Block could have serious repercussions. It offers individualized attention and resources that cater specifically to the needs of those who require extra help. By eliminating it, we risk widening the literacy gap, affecting not just individual students, but also the overall educational outcomes across the district.

I urge the Toronto Catholic District School Board to recognize the immense value of the 5th Block literacy program and to continue funding and supporting it. This program not only aids struggling readers but also uplifts entire communities by ensuring every child has the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.

Please help us ensure that future generations have the same opportunities for academic success as those of my children. Sign this petition to save the 5th Block primary literacy program and ensure that every child has a chance for a brighter future.
