The issue

Navy, Army and Airforce Cadets are not just students; they are the future leaders and defenders of Australia, committed to understanding and/or contributing to our national defence. Through their hard work and dedication, they gain invaluable skills, leadership qualities and a sense of duty that benefits not just themselves, but the entire community.

However, the recent moves to divest Defence properties in Tasmania by the Albanese Government, properties that are vital to the cadet movement, threaten this cause. These properties provide crucial training and development facilities that are instrumental in supporting and nurturing young minds ready to serve the community and nation. Divesting these properties without thorough consultation and engagement with the community and stakeholders jeopardizes the cadet movement's future in Tasmania.

The cadet movement is more than just an extracurricular activity; it is a pipeline for future defence personnel. With a proper understanding of military disciplines and values, cadets are better prepared to enter the Defence Force and protect our way of life. Yet, divestment of properties without consulting the very people who are impacted ignores the vital contributions that cadets can make.

We must ensure that any decision regarding the divestment of defence properties takes into account the voices of those directly affected, including the cadets, their parents and the community that rely on these facilities. By engaging with stakeholders, we can make informed decisions that preserve the integrity of the cadet movement.

We urge the officials responsible for these divestments to halt the process until proper community and stakeholder engagement has taken place. The future of our cadets, and indeed our national defence, depends on it. Your support in signing this petition can help protect and preserve the opportunities that these facilities offer to our future leaders. Please sign and share this petition to let your voice be heard.
