SAVE OUR TORCH! KEEP THE OLYMPIC CAULDRON IN SUMMERHILL — WHERE IT BELONGS

Summerhill is one of Atlanta's oldest communities. Founded by freed people in 1865, our historic neighborhood has been repeatedly displaced by highways, stadiums, and urban renewal. Over 30,000 residents were uprooted in the lead-up to the 1996 Centennial Games alone. But our community endured and when the world came to Atlanta, Summerhill was the heart of the Games. 

The Olympic Cauldron is not just a historical relic. It's an essential part of our community.

Now — without notice, input, or community engagement, and spurred on by private interests, Georgia State University and the University System of Georgia has announced that the Cauldron (i.e. the topmost portion of the torch) will be moved to Centennial Olympic Park. Summerhill found out after the fact, despite having clearly stated its opposition and asking to be a part of any future discussions when a similar covert effort was attempted in 2024-2025. 

They didn't ask or engage. They decided. If you're asking yourself, "Why should I care?"  This move sets a dangerous precedent that could affect any of Atlanta's neighborhoods, historic or not. That's how communities lose their history, identity, and cultural assets — one backroom deal at a time. Summerhill has given enough. We will not give up our history quietly.

Please join us by signing this petition demanding action on three fronts:

1. STOP THE MOVE NOW.  Suspend the process and halt all actions to relocate the Cauldron until the Summerhill community has been meaningfully engaged.

2. SIT DOWN WITH SUMMERHILL. GSU, USG, GWCC representatives and all other decision-makers and influencers meet face-to-face with Summerhill residents and community leaders before any further steps are taken.

3. INVEST IN A WIN-WIN. Rather than take the Cauldron, commit to restoring and activating it in its current location as a dynamic place-making landmark that honors Atlanta's Olympic legacy, celebrates Summerhill's history, and establishes Georgia State University as a genuine community partner.
