Save Student Success & Identities - SJIIP & BSC
The Issue
For so many of us—as first-generation, undocumented, and BIPOC students—the decision to attend UC Merced was a deliberate act of breaking barriers. We chose this university because it prides itself on being a place where students like us can thrive. We work hard every day to contribute to this campus, fueled by the belief that our success is the university's success. The programs offered through the SJIIP (Social Justice Initiatives and Identity Programs) and BSC (Bright Success Center) are not just resources, they are our lifelines. They are the spaces where we found community, nurtured our academic potential, and persevered against all odds.
However, the recent termination of three pivotal staff members—Chad Williams, Camerina A. Morales, and Dr. Danielle Bermundez—poses a serious threat to the integrity and effectiveness of these essential student support programs. These individuals were not just staff members, they were mentors, advocates, and allies who went above and beyond to ensure that students like us received the support necessary to excel both academically and personally.
The abrupt dismissal of these key personnel undermines the support system that has been carefully built over the years to address the unique challenges faced by marginalized student populations. Such administrative actions have the potential to create lasting harm, not just to the individuals directly impacted by this decision, but to the entire community of students who depend on these programs for their success.
We demand the immediate reinstatement of Chad Williams, Camerina A. Morales, and Dr. Danielle Bermundez to their former positions. Furthermore, we insist on the protection of the Social Justice Initiatives and Identity Programs, as well as the Bright Success Center, from any future administrative decisions or merging that could diminish their impact or accessibility.
These programs are crucial in ensuring a supportive and inclusive environment within UC Merced, allowing students from diverse backgrounds to access the opportunities and assistance needed to overcome systemic barriers. By reinstating these staff members and safeguarding these programs, UC Merced would reaffirm its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, embodying the values it advertises to prospective students.
Let us unite in calling on the administration of UC Merced to take the necessary steps to correct this situation immediately. Signing this petition will help protect the essential support systems our university prides itself upon and guard the interests of current and future students who depend on these vital resources. Please join us in advocating for the reinstatement of these invaluable staff members and the protection of our cherished programs. Sign the petition today.
