Since 1843, St. Mary of the Assumption Church has been a staple of the community. Residents of Waterford-Halfmoon have been amazed by its devine beauty. The church has paved the way for a committed and faithful community of believers throughout Waterford-Halfmoon, Troy, Cohoes, Lansingburg and other areas in the region. St. Mary of the Assumption Church is responsible for the faith formation of many generations of residents in the region, as well as top notch education. Now, the church’s future remains in flux. With the Augustinian priests leaving the area, Bishop Edward Scharfenberger must now decide if he will continue to keep the church open, or shutter its doors for good. If Bishop Scharfenberger were to permit the closure of the church, it would indeed be a tragedy for our community and a disaster for the faithful.
