Save St Joseph’s — Keep Families at the Heart of the West End

Keep St Joseph’s open. We oppose the closure of our school and call on Camden Council, the Diocese of Westminster and the governors to work with our community to secure its future.

St Joseph’s is one of the foundations of our local community. Closing it would do lasting damage to the relationships and support networks that hold our neighbourhood together. Once our school is lost, we cannot  bring it back.

Since opening in 1852, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Covent Garden has educated generations of families. Today’s children follow in the footsteps of parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. Former pupils include Yusuf / Cat Stevens, alongside generations of local people whose lives and memories are part of its history.

Our small school has a real family feel. Children feel safe, teachers know them as individuals, and families of children with special educational needs and disabilities receive care, understanding and support. Its latest Ofsted inspection recognised Outstanding education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Excellent teaching and a nurturing environment give our children the confidence and grounding to flourish.

As the only Catholic primary school in our local area, St Joseph’s provides an education rooted in faith, kindness and respect, welcoming children of all faiths and none. More than half our pupils do not have a Catholic background, but their families choose us because they appreciate our values.

Behind the West End’s theatres and busy streets are families who call this neighbourhood home. Our school connects them with neighbours, parishioners, local clubs and community organisations. Friendships formed at the gates become lasting networks of care.

Closure would affect the whole area. The knock-on effects could reach community hubs, clubs and local businesses that our families use and support. Sending children elsewhere risks weakening those everyday connections and making families more isolated. The West End must remain a place where children and families belong.

We will not stand by and let our community lose this school. To parents, former pupils, parishioners, neighbours, businesses and community organisations: we need your help. Please sign and share this petition to keep St Joseph’s open—for today’s children and generations to come.

Established in 1852. Loved for generations. Worth protecting.
