Save Spoony! (Social media app for the disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent)
The Issue
Spoony, known for their slogan, "All of the friends. None of the fear." Is a small 18+ social media app designed with disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent communities in mind. Combining a stress-minimal friend-matching function to find people of similar age, struggles, and interest, with the familiar posting style of other notable apps like X, Tumblr, and Threads. The intelligent and fast-moving moderation system (combining human efforts with AI detection to ensure proper punishment action and prevent false bans) and kind, open-minded userbase allows the app to follow through on it's safety promise. As you can assume, many disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent people are deeply attached to this app, most feeling like it's the only one safe enough for them to express themselves freely, including myself.
But the developers of this "too good to be true" social media platform are now being punished for their upright, user-first focus. Upon rejecting generative-AI implementation in favor of company integrity, user mental health and growing concerns over the emotional relationships people were forming with the previously added AI-powered digital therapists, funding to keep the app running and moderated has now fallen through.
The Co-founder and CEO of Spoony, Nicholas Carlton, was incredibly vocal on his feelings about generative-AI after the removal of the AI-powered therapists, declaring Spoony's embrace of "fiercely human" design in what he described as, "an era of AI slop". AI-focused investors, as you can assume, did not recieve this message well.
As of now, the only way to support this company is by interacting with the app and community. Thankfully, there are many ways you can do this!
.1 Follow and interact with their social media accounts on Instagram, X, Threads, TikTok, and more! They also have a podcast titled, "No Spoons to Give," where they discuss and share the many experiences consenting users post about when on Spoony, amplifying their voices on the many highs and lows the disabled community faces. If that sounds like your thing, it's avaliable on Spotify, Apple podcasts, and Youtube!
.2 Download the app, create an account, and begin socializing with the many users. Get active, find friends, create your own posts about whatever you'd like, and interact with the posts other users publish.
.3 Rate the app. Be sure to include any constructive criticisms and positive notes you've gathered through your experience with Spoony.
.4 Share the app. Right now, the only way to support the company is by raising awareness about it. So, share it! Send it to your friends, your family, create posts on other platforms about it.
5. Join the Spoony Squad. Unlike the other options, this does have 5 must-haves.
• You are 18 or older
• You are an active member of Spoony
• You are passionate about creating a safe space for disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent people
• You are avaliable for 1-2 hours each month
• You are full of ideas, opinions, and feedback
6. Vote for Spoony in the Webby Awards!
This is a new and temporary option, as voting closes April 16th, 2026, but another huge way to support Spoony in their journey for new ownership is to vote for them in the Webby Awards! Described as "the Oscars for the web", winning the Webby Awards will put Spoony on a global stage! The link down below will lead you straight to the category they're in, but if you're like me and you struggle to trust links, Google "Webby Awards" and find the catagory "Accessibility and Inclusion". There you'll find where you can vote for Spoony.

If you are in any of the communities mentioned, an ally of said communities, or are passionate in the stand against AI slop, please share this petition and the ways we can support Spoony described above. We can not let unethical AI tools and greedy investors be the reason an already disadvantaged community loses this immense support.
*For potential legal reasons, I'd like to emphasize that I am in no way related to the Spoony company itself beyond being an active member on the social media application. I am not an employee or volunteer speaking on behalf of the company professionally.
