Save Southwick Hockey Club & our community Astroturf

Save Southwick Hockey Club & our community Astroturf
The Issue
In August, a crucial decision will be made that could significantly impact the future of our local sports community in Steyning. The Astroturf at Steyning Grammar School, a facility that has served as a home ground for four sporting clubs, will become unavailable for community hire. Even more troubling, there are no plans to replace it with another Astroturf, causing a ripple effect that threatens the existence of the Southwick Hockey Club. The new pitch they are proposing is only suitable for football and rugby.
Southwick Hockey Club, with its rich history of nearly 100 years is now at risk of closing its doors permanently. This community facility has been more than just a pitch; it has been a place for individuals of all ages to gather, learn, and grow through sports.
The removal of this community resource would not only mean the loss of a sports venue but have a wider impact. Individuals in the community and pupils at SGS will lose their choice of sport to play. Both Steyning Cricket Club and Steyning Grammar School would lose substantial hire fees for the pitch and clubhouse services. The local clubs that depend on this facility will struggle to find alternate grounds, and the community spirit that thrives here is at serious risk of dissipating.
We urge Steyning Grammar School to reconsider their decision, and replace with a new astroturf for the school and community groups. Solutions such as seeking funding from local businesses or community grants for a new Astroturf installation can be explored. Collaborating on a plan that ensures these clubs continue to have a home will support the future of the athletes and maintain the invaluable sense of community spirit.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the call for immediate action to save our pitch, our hockey club, and to preserve a crucial community facility for future generations.
