Save Solar in Hawaii - VETO SB 2510

Save Solar in Hawaii - VETO SB 2510
The Issue
Tell Governor Ige to VETO SB 2510, which will limit our ability to fight climate change and inflict massive damage on the solar and renewable energy industry, raise costs for all ratepayers and residents, and put the State's renewable energy, resilience, and economic recovery goals in jeopardy. The Senate-sponsored bill would tip the scales in favor of expensive and high-emission biomass or biofuel projects and penalize proven solar and storage technologies. This bill picks winners and puts constraints on industry innovation and customer choice.
This flawed bill would effectively kill critically needed solar development on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Lanai which are proudly beyond, or approaching, the solar limit that this bill sets with an arbitrary 45% cap. Solar accounted for 46% of all new electricity-generating capacity added in the U.S. in 2021. This represents the third year in a row that solar has made up the largest share of new generating capacity in the U.S. demonstrating the free market's choice that solar is currently the most cost-effective and efficient source of renewable energy generation.
Solar is also a vital part of our local economy and construction industry, providing many well-paying jobs for people with a variety of skillsets. The solar industry is a convergence of several fields including construction & electrical trades, engineering, finance, software & technology. This bill would hinder local innovation and further support the “brain drain” familiar in Hawaii as our youngest and brightest professionals seek employment in other states with growing solar and renewable energy industries driven by more flexible regulatory policies.
Sign this petition to inform Governor David Ige, that as an electric ratepayer in Hawaii and/or as someone who supports innovation into the decarbonization of our economy, you demand SB 2510 be Vetoed and not allowed into law.
