Save Skirlington Market & Car Boot - A Vital Attraction for East Yorkshire
The Issue
For decades, Skirlington Market and Carboot has been a cornerstone of life in East Yorkshire. Every Sunday, around 15,000 visitors come from local villages and from all over the UK.
They don’t just support our stallholders, caterers and car boot traders. They also bring vital trade to our towns, shops, pubs, cafés and holiday parks. Many visitors go on to buy caravans and lodges on the surrounding sites, and some even choose to move to East Yorkshire because of the market. Coach operators regularly make Skirlington Market and Carboot a main stop on their trips, before heading on to other towns like Bridlington, Hornsea or Scarborough.
Skirlington Market & Car Boot has always been a family run business. Founded by Keith Bemrose in 1986, starting with just a handful of stalls on the Skirlington site. Over the years, with hard work and community support, it grew steadily into what it is today; one of Yorkshire's biggest and best-loved attractions. For the last 19 years, the market has been managed by Keith's daughter Angela, and son-in-law Tom, continuing the family tradition and providing a place where generations of visitors, traders and car booters have made memories.
Closing Skirlington Market and Carboot would devastate livelihoods, harm East Yorkshire’s tourism economy and take away part of what makes our area special. It would be like taking the seafront away from Bridlington.
Why is now the time to act?
The site owners are about to submit a planning application. If it is approved, they could give Skirlington Market and Carboot notice to leave. We must act now to show the strength of opposition and protect one of East Yorkshire’s biggest attractions before it is lost
We, the undersigned, call on Charles Dewhirst MP, Member of Parliament for Bridlington & the Wolds, to safeguard Skirlington Market and Carboot and ensure this much-loved attraction continues for years to come.
