Save Skating on Palgrave Pond!

The Issue

For 24 years, Ken Hunt has maintained hockey and skating rinks on the Palgrave Mill Pond for the community to use for free. The pond has become the heart of the community in the winter, with residents, families and visitors alike enjoying a great Canadian tradition.

In 2021, when the pond was threatened with closure, over 4,000 people signed a petition in a matter of days to help save it. A not-for-profit organisation was formed, the Palgrave Pond Community Inc (PPCI), and an agreement was reached with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and Town of Caledon to allow skating to continue.

On December 3, the PPCI was informed that the TRCA and the Town of Caledon no longer support the agreement that was reached in 2021, alleging that warmer weather has made the ice less viable and the Town no longer wants to take on the liability and responsibility involved. Our understanding is that decision was made by the TRCA and Town leadership, and not by Town of Caledon Council.

We have put together an extensive response to the reasons the TRCA and Town of Caledon have given for the closure, and we are urging them to reconsider and allow skating on Palgrave Pond as long as it can be done safely, which it can under the PPCI's extensive safety procedures.

Please see our full response to the TRCA/Town of Caledon position - we fundamentally disagree that the pond is unsafe, or that we had any previous agreement to shut down after last season.

Also see recent news articles on the closure from the Globe and Mail, Caledon Citizen, Caledon Enterprise, and Just Sayin' Caledon.

Please help us save skating on Palgrave Pond!
